Create a modular indoor climbing wall

Ako Playrooms Rectangular Climbing Panels are modular wall-mounted panels designed for indoor bouldering and free climbing.

Each panel can be installed horizontally or vertically, allowing you to configure the climbing area to suit the available wall space. Pre-installed T-nuts allow compatible bolt-on climbing holds to be positioned and repositioned to create different climbing routes and levels of challenge.

Climbing supports gross motor development, including strength, balance, coordination, motor planning and body awareness.

Each panel is manufactured from high-grade 18 mm birch plywood with a rear structural backing frame and is supplied ready for installation and the addition of compatible climbing holds.

Engineer-certified installation detail — the panel construction and standard timber-framed installation method have been reviewed and certified by a structural engineer, subject to the requirements, assumptions and limitations stated in the engineering documentation and Ako Playrooms Installation & Safety Guide.

Suitable for indoor residential play spaces. Commercial installations require site-specific assessment and confirmation that the proposed installation complies with applicable local requirements.

Important: Climbing holds and fall-protection surfacing are sold separately. Please read the Ako Playrooms Rectangular Climbing Panel Installation & Safety Guide before purchasing and before installation.

These panels are made to order and generally have a manufacturing lead time of approximately 4–6 weeks. Stock may occasionally be available but is not guaranteed.

WHY FAMILIES CHOOSE AKO CLIMBING PANELS

Installation Requirements

Climbing Panels must only be installed onto a flat, structurally sound supporting wall capable of supporting the panel, user and forces generated during climbing.

For installation to timber framing, each panel must span at least two separate structural studs or nogs. Timber framing must be a minimum of 90 × 45 mm.

Use a minimum of four structural fixing points per panel, with two fixing points into each of at least two separate studs or nogs. Fixings must pass through the front panel and rear backing frame and into the centre of the structural framing.

Do not fix the panels into plasterboard, wall lining, brick or brick veneer alone.

The supplied 100 mm 14G batten screws are intended for suitable timber-framed installations meeting the requirements of the Ako Playrooms Installation & Safety Guide. The installer must confirm that the supplied screws and proposed fixing locations are appropriate for the actual wall construction and condition.

For concrete, concrete block, steel framing or other wall construction, specialised fixings may be required and are not covered by the standard timber-framed installation detail. An appropriately qualified professional must determine the suitable fixing method.

The purchaser and installer are responsible for identifying the existing wall construction and confirming that the supporting structure is sound, free from defects and suitable for climbing loads before installation.

If the structure, framing, substrate or fixing method cannot be confidently established, installation must not proceed until it has been assessed by an appropriately qualified builder, installer or structural professional.

For overhanging walls, ceilings or installation configurations outside the standard vertical-wall installation described in the Ako Playrooms Installation Guide, obtain specific professional advice before installation.

Product Safety
  • Adult supervision is required whenever children are using the climbing wall.
  • For indoor bouldering and free climbing only. Do not attach ropes, anchors, belay systems, swings or other suspension equipment to the climbing panels.
  • Only one climber should use each climbing route at a time. Keep other children and observers clear of the fall area while someone is climbing.
  • Do not jump, swing or deliberately drop from the panels.
  • Maximum user weight is 70 kg per panel.
  • Do not modify the panels, remove T-nuts, drill additional holes or use incompatible climbing holds or fixings.
  • Use appropriate fall-protection surfacing beneath and around the full climbing area. Fall protection must be selected to suit the installed climbing height and must prevent the user from bottoming out onto the underlying floor.
  • Keep the fall area free from furniture, toys, sharp edges and other obstacles.
  • Do not install climbing panels over live electrical outlets. Any electrical services within the proposed installation area must be appropriately dealt with by a qualified person before installation.
  • Inspect the panels, climbing holds and all fixings before use. Carry out a more thorough inspection at least every 30 days, or more frequently where the wall receives heavy use.
  • Check for loose holds or fixings, movement between the panel and wall, splintering, delamination, deterioration and damaged or stripped T-nuts.
  • Stop use immediately if any part of the climbing wall, fixing system or fall protection becomes loose, damaged or deteriorated. Do not resume use until the issue has been properly rectified.
  • Installation, use, inspection and maintenance must follow the current Ako Playrooms Rectangular Climbing Panel Installation & Safety Guide.

ENGINEERING & SITE CONDITIONS

The standard timber-framed installation detail for Ako Playrooms Rectangular Climbing Panels has been reviewed and certified by a structural engineer.

The engineering certification applies only within the scope, construction, materials, fixings, framing requirements, load limits, assumptions and jurisdiction stated in the applicable engineering documentation.

The engineering certification does not certify the condition or structural capacity of an individual customer's existing wall, framing or completed installation.

The installer must verify the actual wall construction, structural framing, fixing locations and condition of the supporting structure before installation and confirm that the completed installation complies with the Ako Playrooms Installation & Safety Guide and applicable engineering requirements.

Installations outside the certified standard installation detail require separate assessment by an appropriately qualified professional.
